Arizona Desert Flash Flood Footage

The videos for this week provide some rare footage of desert flash flooding. Both are taken not far from homes.

This second clip is great because it shows the start of the flood and the initial flow down the dry channel. Watch how the flow path keeps spreading and widening.

I’ve had an opportunity to be a part of a number of geomorphic and alluvial fan analyses so this footage is particular interesting to me. In the field, you’re simply analyzing dry channels, looking at active versus inactive flow paths, and using geomorphic and soils maps to delineate the extents of instability so it’s fun to see actual footage.

Great footage! I’ve shared the link with the science teachers at our school. (I work in curriculum design at the American School high school in Lansing, IL).

    Thanks.
